A New Maternity Wing at Kinondo Kwetu Hospital

The present maternity ward from 2008 is much too small to cater for the number of deliveries that take place at Kinondo Kwetu Hospital.

Apart from new delivery rooms and wards, the new wing will also give room for ante and post natal care, a new born unit, gynecology and other special clinics.

A tissue laboratory will be established in the premises of the present maternity ward. This will enable us to further develop our laboratory services and facilitate the hospital’s special focus on eliminating cervical cancer.

Kristina Gemzell Danielsson, Professor, Chief Physician, Head of the WHO collaboration center in Human Reproduction Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital, who visited Kinondo Kwetu Hospital in 2022, has said about this new investment:

Despite the progress achieved, great needs remain in maternal and women's health in Kenya. Many women still seek care late in pregnancy, complications are detected too late, and access to advanced neonatal care is limited. At the same time, the population is growing rapidly, putting further pressure on already strained resources.

A new wing for childbirth, maternal care and women's health is therefore not only an expansion, but it is a strategic investment in lives. It enables earlier detection of high-risk pregnancies, safer births and better care for premature and sick newborns. It also creates the conditions for integrating prevention, treatment and research, which is crucial for reducing maternal and child mortality in the long term.

Through this investment, we can take the next step: from saving lives here and now to building a system that prevents lives from being put at risk in the first place.
